Getting Married Your Way: A Reflection On The Tiny & Intimate Wedding...

Tiny weddings are full of emotion.

Whether yours is an elopement for two or a small and intimate gathering for 10-50 people,it's all the same.

A wedding is an event. AND it is an emotional event.

As you plan your wedding day, I invite you to remember what's important to you.

If you want a beach wedding for just the two of you, do it. If you want to escape to Willows Lodge for a sweet ceremony for a dozen of your closest people and dinner at the Herbfarm, do it. If you want to get married in a hot air balloon, do it.

There is something incredibly liberating about taking such a big lifetime moment and truly making it your own.

A Fall/Winter Elopements - Always Have A Plan "B"

Fall & Winter elopements in Seattle, WA.

Many couples brave the elements and if the weather isn't crazy, raining or insanely cold, they love to hold a sweet and brief ceremony outdoors.

As you plan your elopement, always have a back-up plan. If you are thinking about an outdoor ceremony "if the weather is good," have Plan B so if things flip quickly on a wedding day, you are covered.

It's much easier with small and intimate weddings to do a quick turnaround.

While I love weddings of all sizes, tiny weddings hold a special place in my heart. There is just something about a couple, a few witnesses and a sweet moment that make my day.

Jason & Violet - A Sweet & Intimate Wedding - Rain Or Not Rain!

There was a last minute change on the afternoon of November 12th.

Violet truly wanted her wedding outside at Discovery Park. However, an hour before the ceremony was to start, I received a call saying the ceremony had been moved inside.

Hard move. Smart move.

And inside we went for Jason and Violet's wedding ceremony - sweet, simple and intimate. It was also warm and comfortable and more memorable than if we had been in the wind and rain on the bluff at Discovery Park!

I caught this photo immediately after the ceremony where the couple joined their son, Owen, to create a sand memento to take home from their wedding day.

Jason and Violet - I wish you much blessing and love.

Rain, Rain & More Rain! 3 Tips For A Fun & Memorable Elopement In The Rain...

When I think about it, I realize that many of my elopements happen in the rain.

For many couples, getting married outside in a small and intimate ceremony trumps the threat of raindrops.

Often, an elopement is at a Seattle Park, view point or home and if it isn't freezing outside, we're usually outdoors!

If you are being married under the raindrops, here are 3 quick and easy tips for a fun and memorable moment:

1) Plan For Umbrellas! Colorful umbrellas not only cover everyone but they offer color for wonderful wedding photos.

2) Keep The Marriage License Indoors. Some couples want to sign a license outside...not. Rain can create chaos with the ink of a legal document so plan to sign indoors.

3) Find a Tree. Oftentimes, one gets less wet in the rain under a tree or canopy of trees. I was just out at Tree House Point in Preston yesterday for Eric and Erin's tiny ceremony. Yes, it was raining and because of the tree coverage, we didn't even need an umbrella!

You know what makes me crazy?

An Officiant who cancels on a couple at the last minute and/or just disappears - especially for an elopement!

Ryan and Ashley - Let's Get Married This Coming Weekend!

I get a kick out of last minute calls that go something like, "Hi Annemarie! Can you marry us this weekend?"

And I was delighted to meet up with Ryan and Ashley for their sweet elopement at The Salish Lodge this past week.

Ryan and Ashley checked in for the weekend and enjoyed what the Salish Lodge is famous for with newlywed couples: lovely accommodations, superb dining, a couple's massage and more.

What was extra fun about this experience was that when I arrived, Ryan and Ashley didn't have witnesses. So, after asking a few people visiting the falls, I found Tim and Erika who were delighted serve as witnesses!

Ryan and Ashley - Welcome to Washington State and my best to you for a beautiful marriage adventure!

Happy July 4th! And A Big Holiday Weekend For Elopements in Seattle!

4th of July is a crazy good weekend in Seattle for elopements!

Over the weekend, I met Brian and Sarah on Alki Beach for their vows and made my way to Tacoma for Glen and Sharon's wedding ceremony on Ruston Way.

Last night, just before the fireworks I'll be in Ballard to make sure Lenny and Sarah are hitched in style!

If you are planning a holiday elopement in Seattle - perhaps thinking about Labor Day - plan early. Hotel rooms are at a premium and if you need a permit for a special park, making plans around this sooner than later is smart!

Get Married This Week in Seattle for $450 Or Less – Your Quickie Wedding Guide!

Here’s your easy “how to guide” for putting together your wedding ceremony and mini-celebration on a budget of $450 or less. Considering the cost of many weddings these days, this is a bargain!

1) Get Your Marriage License: First things first. You need a valid marriage license. You can obtain your marriage license from any Courthouse or Auditor’s/Clerk’s office in the State of Washington and it is good in Seattle and King County. If you live in King County or are near by, you may visit at King County marriage license office in person to pick up your license. To apply for your license in person, you and your Sweetheart will need to show up in person with proof of ID and $64.

If you are out of the Seattle area or even out of State, you may contact the King County Marriage License office and start the process via phone, fax and mail to get your hands on a marriage license.

The cost of a marriage license in King County is $64 and there is a three-day waiting period from the date the license is issued. So, to get married within a week, you must apply for your license and wait for three days before your legal ceremony. For more information on applying for a marriage license in person or by mail, go to: http://www.kingcounty.gov/courts/marriage.aspx

2) Find a “Marrying Person” To Get You Married: There are dozens of Officiants of all faiths and traditions in the Seattle area including me! You may do a Google search under “Seattle Officiant” or “Seattle Wedding Minister” to find a few people who appeal to you. Your first quest is to inquire with an Officiant or Minister about their availability and fee. If you do enough searching, you will find there are Officiants available for every budget.

3) Find Two Witnesses: In Seattle, you need two witnesses over the age of 18 to witness your marriage. If you have two people to witness your ceremony, no problem! If you require two witnesses, ask your Officiant or Minister about what they can do to help. On occasion, a couple with no witnesses will be married in a public place and invite two people to witness their ceremony. The surprise witnesses are usually touched by be a part of a wedding ceremony and often get a kick out of the unexpected invitation.

4) Do the Math ~ Your $450 Quickie “Let’s Get Married” Budget: Okay, let’s put the figures together on what it will take to get you married within the week.

Marriage License $64
Officiant $150-250 (on average)
Bouquet (local market) $35
Celebration Meal $100
Grand Total: $449

If you want to get married for less than $350, nix the bouquet and find a place for a “cheap eats” celebration lunch or dinner!

Patricia and Vince Elope To The North Head Lighthouse, Ilwaco, Washington!

Patricia & Vince - Inside The North Head Lighthouse, Ilwaco, WA

Road trip! To the North Head Lighthouse and Patricia and Vince's "elopement!"

Photographer Sara Gray captured this sweet photo of Patricia and Vince inside the North Head Light after their wedding ceremony (elopement!) on a windy and blustery Sunday in April.

With 60 mph winds, rain and grey clouds, Patricia and Vince exchanged their vows in the lantern room of this famous and history-filled lighthouse.

If you are a light house buff and/or looking for a unique location for your ceremony on the Washington Coast, take a page from Patricia and Vince's playbook and consider the North Head Lighthouse - it's truly a remarkable wedding spot!

Kelli and Olly - Heartfelt Vows, A Few Tears, Two Ducks & Raindrops

I love big weddings.

I love tiny weddings.

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of traveling to Alderbrook Resort on a rainy Sunday morning.

My quest? To marry Kelli and Olly. Just them. And two witnesses from the Resort.

As I began their ceremony, two ducks started to "quack" quite loudy from the water's edge and we all had a nice laugh (ducks mate for life - nice omen, yes?!)

What I loved most about Keli and Olly was the care and thought they put into their vows. Their vows were poignant, heartfelt and written in their individual voice and language.

When it comes to wedding vows, there is no "right or wrong." Keep it real - make it all about your commitment to the relationship - make it about what you love, honor and admire about your partner. Ah, and humor is good, too!

Traveling To The Seattle/Puget Sound Area For Your Elopement - 3 Important Things To Know...

If you are a couple traveling to the Seattle/Puget Sound to elope, here are three planning tips to help you have a beautiful and intimate ceremony and celebration, much like Ben and Sarah did on April 4th at a sweet bed and breakfast in Sequim, WA - rain drop, umbrellas and all!

1) Marriage License - Contact the marriage license office at King County for more information at 206 296 4021. You will need to pick up your marriage license before you arrive or have your Officiant pick it up for you. There is a 3-day waiting period from the day your license is issued so if you decide to wait until you land in Seattle to apply for your license, there is a 3-day wait before you can get hitched.

King County Marriage License: http://www.kingcounty.gov/courts/marriage.aspx

2) Selecting A Best Venue: Here are things to consider. Do you want to be married at the top of the Space Needle, waterside on Alki Beach, on a Washington State Ferry or perhaps at your bed and breakfast or hotel? Seattle offers so many romantic and remarkable possibilities along with grand celebration restaurants include Palisade, Canlis and Cafe Campagne, to name a few.

3) Spend Some Time! Don't rush to get back home (if possible!) Plan to spend a few days (like Ben and Sarah did) to explore the area and to have a few adventures. You will not have an opportunity like this ever again to enjoy your "just married" status so kick up your heels and celebrate, as big as possible!

Elope in Seattle! How To Secure A Valid Marriage License in Seattle, Washington...

To be married in Seattle, Washington, you need a valid marriage license. Whether you are being married in three days, next week or next month, here are easy steps to obtain and use your license in Seattle.

1) How To Apply and Obtain A Valid Marriage License in Seattle If you are being married in Seattle, Washington, you need a valid marriage license issued by King County (or any County in Washington State).

To do this, you and your partner will visit a Marriage Licensing office in Seattle/King County during regular business hours. The cost for the license is $64, cash or debit/credit card. No blood test is required and both of you must at least 18 years of age.

When you leave the government office, you'll walk away with a packet of legal paperwork which you will give to your Officiant or Minister on your wedding day. The person who marries you must review this paperwork before your ceremony takes place and he or she will then get required signatures (both of yours and two witnesses) and return your signed legal document back to the County for processing/certification.

Note: There is a 3-day waiting period from the date your marriage license is issued. What this means is that from the date your license is issued, you must wait 3 full days before you can be legally married. Also, most people who reside in the Seattle area secure their marriage license in Seattle. If by chance you are being married in any other County in Washington State, the license you secure in Seattle/King County is valid in all Counties in Washington State.

For more information, please visit the King County Marriage License website at: http://www.kingcounty.gov/courts/marriage.aspx or call (206) 296 4021. All particulars are on this website (including office locations) and while most couples do apply for a license in person, you may initiate the process via phone and regular mail.

2) Get Married in Seattle: How To Use Your Valid License Once you have your valid license in hand and have exhausted the three-day waiting period, you can get married!

If you have a Minister or Officiant to marry you, fantastic. If you need someone to marry you, fire up Google or your favorite search engine and do a little bit of snooping for someone who resonates with you.

I wish you a happy elopement!

Elope in Snohomish County, Washington? Yes, Really! Here Are 5 Easy Steps To Get Hitched...

Elope to Snohomish County, Washington!

Snohomish County is a beautiful County just north of Seattle and offers unique and memorable location/venue opportunities for an elopement.

As you consider eloping in Snohomish County, here are 5 steps to get you from engaged to married.

1) Apply and Pick-up Your License from the Snohomish County Marriage Licensing Office. You can't elope in Snohomish County without your valid marriage license so securing your license is one of the first things you must do. Snohomish County has a very comprehensive website loaded with all of the information you need to apply and secure a valid marriage license.

You may apply and pick-up your license in person or you may start the process via phone and regular mail. If you apply for your license in person, you must both show up. The license fee is $64 and no blood test is required. Note: there is a 3-day waiting period from the date your license is issued before you can get married and your license is good for up to 60 days from the date it is issued.

2) Decide On "Where" To Elope in Snohomish: Snohomish County is popular with local couples and couples traveling to the area because it offers a wide variety of indoor and outdoor venues/locations for an elopement. Whether you want to get married on the water, at the top of the mountain, at a quaint country bed and breakfast or perhaps on a ferry departing from Mukilteo to Whidbey Island, your options are endless.

Check out the Snohomish County Tourism Bureau for more information and ideas: http://www.snohomish.org/

3) Your Guest List: 2 Witnesses (and maybe more!) - As you plan your elopement, don't forget you will need two witnesses over 18 years of age!

4) Locate an Officiant Or Minister Who Is Happy To Officiate Your Elopement. There are many wonderful Officiants and Ministers located in Western Washington and in Snohomish County who would love to participate in your elopement - including me!

Use the internet to locate a few folks and find a person who resonates with you. Most of all, if you are eloping in the popular Summer wedding season, make up a short list of several candidates as finding someone can be often more challenging during this busy time of year.

5) Your Wedding Day: Show Up, Get Married And File Your Legal Paperwork. That's right! Show up for your elopement, exchange your vows and don't forget to file your legal paperwork with the County. Oftentimes, your Officiant or Minister will do this for you as a courtesy. So, elope today and enjoy every moment of creating a lifetime memory!

Places To Elope in Washington State: 5 Ideas For Your Small And Intimate Wedding Ceremony

Washington State and the Pacific Northwest offer some of the most fantastic elopement locations and venues for a couple and with picturesque mountains, water, countryside and much more, this State offers many wedding site options.

As you consider "where" to elope in Washington State, here are 6 fun location ideas for your easy and small wedding ceremony:

1) Leavenworth, Washington - A two-hour ride from Seattle, Leavenworth is a sweet little German town that welcomes weddings of all sizes in a big day. Here, you can find quaint inns and bed and breakfast places offering elopement packages at affordable rates, especially during off-season. While in Leavenworth, you can get married, enjoy a great overnight or two at a special place and perhaps celebrate your wedding bliss by taking advantage of many of the guided outdoor adventures - cross-country skiing, white water rafting or hiking.

2) Ruby Beach and the Washington State Coast - The Coast of Washington is a big place and little known Ruby is a beautiful and mesmerizing place to exchange wedding vows. Ruby Beach is located just South of Forks, Washington. Once you reach Ruby Beach, you and your officiant and witnesses can take a short hike down to the ocean and get married waterside. Consult the tide schedule to insure a best time for your ceremony and also take a peek at the map and Washington State ferry schedule as you plan your journey to the Washington Coast. For instance, if you are traveling to Ruby Beach from Seattle, it will take you 4-6 hours to get there, depending on what route you take.

3) Ashford, Washington (Mount Rainier) - If you and your Sweetheart are outdoor enthusiasts, consider getting married near or at the base of Mount Rainier. Eloping to the Ashford area and Mt. Rainier is best in the Spring and Summer season and the surrounding area offers luxurious as well as rustic accommodations for your wedding night.

4) Tulalip Resort & Casino - Calling all casino lovers! Believe it or not, the popular Tulalip Casino & Resort hosts a number of small and intimate wedding ceremonies each year. Located one hour North of Seattle, this plush resort not offers a fabulous casino but a wonderful resort where you can snuggle in and relish in your new married status!

5) The San Juan Islands (on the ferry or Island) - There is nothing more fun than getting married on a Washington State Ferry and/or hitching a ride on ferry and getting married on a Puget Sound island. Orcas Island and San Juan Island are two of the most popular "marrying islands" in Washington and offers a wide variety of locations and venues. Contact the Chamber of Commerce on both Islands for venue information.

6) Port Townsend, Washington - This seaside town is a favorite for couples in Washington State who want to elope but don't want to travel too far. Port Townsend offers waterside locations as well as city parks for your wedding ceremony. And if you want to be married in a historic castle, check out Port Townsend's Manresa Castle!

Elope to Leavenworth, Washington ~ Over The Mountains To Get Married!

Chris and Joey fell in love with Leavenworth and decided to host a small group of family and friends for their "elopement!"

Leavenworth is a very fun place to get married. There are many bed and breakfast establishments and small inns for a tiny and intimate ceremony and celebration.

Chris and Joey rented out The Snowgrass Lodge and hosted a lunch for their family and friends. They decorated the lodge themselves and were very thoughtful with details, gifts and activities for children.

An elopement is all about the "feeling" - taking a bit of time to decide what you truly desire for your wedding day and with simplicity as the rule, making a dream come true.

And moments before they were pronounced "husband and wife," a gorgeous rainbow broke out as a most wonderful affirmation of this loving relationship.

Sean and Alexa ~ thank you for giving me the opportunity to be a part of your ferry wedding - cupcakes, rainbow, happy family, sweet son and all!

A Soldier And His Sweetheart Marry At Woodinville's Willows Lodge On A Chilly And Sunny Sunday Afternoon...

Sometimes, a story is so sweet and simple.

You see, Zach loves Meghan. Meghan loves Zach.

This young couple wed in front of a dozen happy family members at Woodinville's Willows Lodge, in the sweet sunshine of a February Sunday afternoon.

I really appreciate this young couple. Zach planned the ceremony and celebration dinner and Meghan was able to relax and truly enjoy her wedding day.

Your Marriage License: Don't Forget The "3-Day Waiting Rule" In Washington State

Okay, this isn't the most romantic topic to discuss, and here it goes!

Simply put, if you are being married in Washington State, you will need a valid marriage license.

Please remember that there is a "3-day waiting period" from the date your marriage license is issued.

Many couples don't realize this and I wouldn't be surprised if many "freak out" the week of their wedding because they have been putting this task off until the last minute.

So, depending on the date of your ceremony, make the time to visit your County Auditor and secure your license with no fretting about time!

Elope Seattle! Tips For Planning Your Small And Intimate Wedding Ceremony in Seattle, Washington...

I love small weddings. I love big weddings.

But we're talking about small wedding here!

As you consider your intimate wedding ceremony on your wedding day, here are a 3 planning tips to consider...

1) "Where" Creates A Big Memory! While your vows and the words of your ceremony are sweet and poignant, the setting for a small and intimate wedding ceremony sets the stage for a big memory. My couples who elope love to get married in very special places and spaces - all the way from the Top of The Space Needle, to on the Monorail, at Alki Beach with their feet in the water...you get the picture!

2) Consider A Weekday Wedding. As you plan your wedding day, ponder having it on a weekday. Venues and hotels love weekday weddings and "vendors" most often will provide a discount outside of the popular weekend time frame.

3) Mark The Moment With Fabulous Photos. Couples cherish wedding photos, no matter what size the wedding! For your elopement or small/intimate ceremony, find a professional photographer who loves tiny engagements and who has flex/affordable small photography packages. A small wedding isn't about the size of the guest list - it's about the moment and exqusitely capturing that moment for a lifetime.

A Favorite Venue/Location For Your Small & Intimate Wedding Ceremony: The Salish Lodge

Over the years, I have traveled to The Salish Lodge for wedding ceremonies of all sizes. Whether your guest list is 2 or 200, The Salish Lodge is one of my most favorite venues for a wedding ceremony.

For a small and intimate wedding ceremony, you and your witnesses can find a hidden cove to exchange vows or perhaps get married on your room deck/patio overlooking Snoqualmie Falls.

And to celebrate your elopement or small/intimate ceremony, be sure to make reservations for breakfast, lunch or dinner at the Lodge's restaurant ~ reserve a table overlooking the Falls and toast to your happiness! www.thesalishlodge.com

Elope Seattle! And Don't Forget Your Wedding Dog!

If you are eloping, and your dog(s) is a beloved part of your life, don't leave the pooch behind!

Each year, I marry a number of couples with Fido at their side, just like Charlie here, who was the "ring pooch" for his guardians, Danny and Amber.

Whether your guest list is 2 or 200, involving your wedding canine in your wedding ceremony is a personal choice and often a highlight for many couples.

Whether your dog walks you down an aisle or path, presents the rings at the ring exchange or just enjoys your exchange of vows, all make for a lifetime moment.

So, if your dog(s) is a beloved family member, buff up your guest list for Fido and elope in style! If you are coming to the Seattle area from out-of-town, many Seattle-area hotels, bed and breakfasts and Inns warmly welcome dogs and their guardians and the opportunity to host an elopement.

Your Seattle Elopement! All Styles ~ Planned and Last Minute ~ It's All About The Love...

Like life, an elopement can be simple and it can be complicated. Each couple I work with has a different and poignant story. For instance, this week:

~ Kevin and Melinda were married in the middle of snow flurries in Snoqualmie, in front of a roaring wood stove at a private home.

~ Jim and Rebecca were married on the Harbor Steps in downtown Seattle, the site of one of their first dates.

~ Gary and Denise exchanged vows with their beloved dog and two witnesses at the Marymoor Dog Park in Redmond.

~ Richard and Felicia are being married today and the circumstances are very bittersweet because a beloved family member is gravely ill.

An elopement - getting married in a small and intimate way - may be light on the planning but it is huge on defining a life moment.

And in this work that I do, I so incredibly grateful to be a part of the tapestry of love and life.
